Students Visit the State House to Show Appreciation for Financial Aid

On February 26th, 12 Emmanuel students attended Student Financial Aid Day at the State House on Beacon Hill. This annual event, co-sponsored by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AICUM) and the Massachusetts Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA), serves as an opportunity for students to lend their voices in support of last year's funding of the need-based financial aid programs that help Massachusetts residents stay in-state for college.

This year, Governor Deval Patrick was on hand to welcome nearly 200 college students from across the state and to speak about the importance of student aid in Massachusetts. A proponent of education, the governor has recently requested a $112-million increase for the MassGrant program in his FY14 budget proposal.

Emmanuel student Alan Gabriel '14 was chosen as one of eight students from the top-attendings schools to greet and welcome Governor Patrick to the Great Hall of the State House.

"Meeting Governor Patrick was a really great experience considering I am a political science major," Gabriel said. "With my first opportunity to speak I said, 'Wow, Governor, this is well-kept office, I'm impressed,' which led to him telling us about components of the room and some of the significance memorabilia had to him."

After his speech, Governor Patrick took two questions from the audience. Dakota Roundtree-Swain '16 had the opportunity to ask the governor about his plan to close the college achievement gap for foster students.

Emmanuel students were then able to meet with Commonwealth legislators, including Representatives Walter F. Timilty and Ann-Margaret Ferrante, as well as Second Assistant Majority Leader and Assistant Majority Whip Kathi-Anne Reinstein, to thank them for their hard work and encourage them to continue advocating for state grants and financial aid.

"This is a great day for both legislators and students," said Associate Director of Student Financial Services Migdalia Gomez. "Our representatives are constantly being asked for things, but this is a day when they just get to hear 'thank you' for all of their hard work on behalf of our students."
